March 13, 2020

Dear Parents:

As you may already know, Governor Pritzker held a news conference today at 4:00 declaring a mandatory shutdown of public schools in the state of Illinois from March 17 through March 30All schools will be in session on Monday, March 16.  At this time, the state anticipates school to resume on March 31st.  During this mandatory shut down, no extra-curricular activities will be held.  This includes sporting events, practices, academic events, etc.  All school related activities are canceled during the closure.  The governor is further asking all students and communities to exercise social distancing during this time to assist with the prevention and spread of COVID-19.

Again, the closure will begin on Tuesday, March 17.  Please be advised that this mandatory shutdown will continually be evaluated by the governor.  I believe that it is extremely likely that there may be additional days or potentially weeks added to the shutdown.  As a precaution, I would highly advise all parents to be prepared for school closures beyond March 30.

I sent home a letter earlier today regarding the E-Learning Plan. Your child will receive additional instructions on Monday regarding our plan for continuing learning during the closure. Again, E-Learning is a method of continuing education through technology or other assistive methods when school is not in session due to an emergency. When your child comes home from school on Monday, s/he will have information regarding learning packets and/or on-line activities to complete while they are home during the closure.  Like I stated previously, we do recognize not all students have access to the Internet and are planning accordingly. Our goal is to continue supporting your child’s learning during this time and appreciate your help as well.

I realize that this is going to cause a hardship for many of our families and school community.  We will continue to keep all of you informed with the latest information as we receive it.  I will be working at school for much of the weekend if you need to reach me.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at mbrink@wcusd1.org or 618-279-7211 ext. 111.

Sincerely,

Dr. Melanie Brink
